What about external data columns?

The BCS allows for defining BCS columns in regular lists, which function as a lookup column, and store the value in the SharePoint list.  Do you plan anything like this, or is it just the external list functionality, where it isn't really a SharePoint list, but a view into external data that acts in some ways like a list?

Thanks!

In the first step/version the Web Part should help to load data from a external database - like the BCS External List. But the Web part should help to integrate business rules, too. When you use the External List, you are not able to define rules or validation - only simple rules are possible like required fields (Note: You can use MS InfoPath to design a special form for the external content type but then you need the SharePoint Enterpise version). The whole idea behind the Web Part is to integrate typical validation rules for business data in a declarative fashion

Of course the Web Part is not comparable with the BCS - because the BSC has got other functions like offline data. But if you need more control about data validation the Web Part is more flexible. And the Web Part needs only SharePoint Foundation.
